Job Summary
To provide strategic direction and legal support on the most complex legal regulatory matters affecting the Bank and promote and maintain legal knowledge management and sharing.

Job Description
We are looking for your regulatory management expertise, to come and provide strategic direction as well as legal support on the most complex legal regulatory matters affecting the Bank. In this role you will also promote and maintain legal knowledge management and sharing.

Some key accountabilities include:
  • Acting as the principal legal advisor to relevant Executive committees by providing legal advice, and guidance on the full range of banking regulatory issues for example, POPIA, the Dodd-Frank Act.
  • Conducting research into legal regulatory matters, draft legal documents and assisting in negotiations which have a legal regulatory element involved.
  • Establishing and building relationships with external law firms and make recommendations to on which external firm/s must be use for which legal regulatory matter.
  • Monitoring the overall performance of such external firm/s and ensure performance standards are as agreed and are being adhered to.
  • Leading counterparts across CIB and, where relevant, Absa to share knowledge and identify regulatory themes, to create a single view on regulatory responses.
  • Driving participation on external industry groups.
  • Reporting to the General Counsel on all aspects of Legal Risk Management.
  • Leading a highly motivated Regulatory and Knowledge Management function which takes accountability for the regulatory and reputational risks falling within this function.

Send in your application if you have;
  • A Post graduate diploma or Masters degree in Banking, Corporate or Commercial law and are an Admitted attorney or Advocate of the High Court in SA with articles at law firm or pupillage.
  • 8 years post admittance experience as an in-house legal counsel in a financial institution, other corporate, in a reputable law firm or at the Bar.
  • 5 years or more experience within the financial services sector handling work with strong multi-jurisdictional dimensions
  • Experience in capital markets and M&A matters preferred.
Education
  • Postgraduate Degrees and Professional Qualifications: Law (Required)
