Background
Under the guidance and direct supervision of the RR, the Wikipedian’s role is to create the wiki-style infmation platform that will centralize and codify institutional and development knowledge within UNDP South Africa to inform the work of UNDP and showcase the work of UNDP South Africa to the world.
At the 2019 UNDP Africa retreat in New York, it was agreed that a wiki-style website, or a “website on which users collaboratively modify content” would be established for the benefit of strengthening management of institutional memory, codifying contextualized best development practices, and externally showcasing the work of UNDP.

To achieve this objective, UNDP would build an internal mechanism – and culture of collaborative knowledge sharing – through the guidance of a Wikipedian-In-Residence to engage current, and former staff members as necessary, to centralize institutional knowledge of UNDP Africa in a single wiki-style platform through the spirit of crowdsourcing information from internal and external experts.
Central to creating this platform, a Wikipedian-In-Residence would be recruited to oversee its technical establishment, build an institutional culture of knowledge centralization, ensure comprehensiveness and accuracy, as well as establish and strengthen links between UNDP Africa and the wider Wikimedia community.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Ensures implementation of wiki-style information platform, focusing on achievement of the following results:
Establish the technical platform for codifying knowledge through wiki-style collaboration within UNDP South Africa
Oversee the centralization and codification of institutions knowledge into the platform, including text, images, and data
Develop an institutional culture of Wiki-style collaborative knowledge sharing in UNDP South Africa
Build the network of Wiki editing within UNDP Africa and the UNDP South Africa CO
Build a community of knowledge product volunteers
Build and maintain a platform of youth empowerment and engagement across the various UNDP South Africa mandates
Make the UNDP South Africa Webpage more innovative and dynamic based on extant corporate policies
Share UNDP institutional knowledge on the Wikimedia Projects platform

2. Ensures development of information and documentation management system focusing on the achievement of the following results:
Development and implementation of CO information and documentation management system in accordance with UNDP policy and the country office needs.
3. Ensures efficient networks administration, focusing on achievement of the following results:
Monitoring of the computing resources to provide a stable and responsive environment.
Monitoring of backup and restoration procedures for both server and local drives.
Provision of technical advice to other agencies as required and monitoring and preparation for cost-recovery for any services provided.

4. Ensure facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing in the CO, focusing on achievement of the following results:
Identification and promotion of different systems and applications for optimal content management, knowledge management and sharing, information provision.
Organization of training for the operations/projects staff on ICT issues.
Synthesis of lessons learned and best practices directly linked to ICT management.
Sound contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice.

The key results have an impact on the overall efficiency of the Country Office including improved business results and client services. An innovative culture of collaborative knowledge sharing has an impact on the organization of office management, knowledge sharing, and information provision.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:

Bachelor’s degree in information technology, knowledge management, communications, or equivalent qualifications. Advanced degree is a plus.

Experience:
Minimum of four years of work experience (minimum 2 years of experience with Master’s level degree) in the areas of interest (information technology, knowledge management, international development). Substantial experience in managing knowledge through a Wikimedia-style platform.Demonstrated understanding of the Wikipedia community, its culture, its development, and of Wiki-related coaching. Demonstrated ability to identify organizational needs and effect cultural change towards building institutional knowled
ge. Demonstrated ability to establish and oversee the technical creation of an organized, robust, comprehensive knowledge sharing platform. Strong working knowledge of the UN.

Language Requirements:

Excellent written and oral English communications skills. Knowledge of additional languages spoken in South Africa is a major asset. Fully literate in terms of Wikimedia, strong familiarity with copyright laws, relevant software and e-networking.
